Basketball seasons end in first, second round

Men's basketball

The men's basketball season ended with a loss in the quarterfinals to the No. 1-ranked University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, 76-61. Before that, the Bears beat Western Carolina University in the first round of the Southern Conference tournament, 67-66, to advance to the quarterfinals. The team finished with a record of 14-19 and 6-12 in conference play.

The game against the Catamounts was a tough back-and-forth game, and the teams were tied, 29-29, going into halftime. The Bears finished strong with a game winner layup made by Alex Holt ‘25 on a pass from Ahmad Robinson ‘25. Holt scored 24 points with six rebounds, while Robinson scored 23 points with nine rebounds. Holt joined Robinson in the 1,000-point-career club during the game against Chattanooga.The Bears outperformed WCU in free-throw percentage and rebounds to secure the win, but shot just 2-for-20 from deep against the Catamounts.

The Bears season ended the same way it did last year in the quarterfinals, but this year to the Mocs. The team scored 43 points in the first half and 27 points in the second with Jah Quinones ‘26 and Robinson being the scoring leaders. Quinones scored 17 points with three rebounds and Robinson scored 12 points with eight rebounds. If Quinones does not enter the transfer portal in the offseason, he figures to be the leading point guard for the team once again.

This season, the team averaged 76.1 points, 39.3 rebounds and 13.2 assists. The team is also saying goodbye to five seniors that include Cam Bryant, Alext Holt, Chips Johnson, Ahmad Robinson and Laurynas Vaistaras.

Women's basketball

The 2024-25 season for women's basketball came to an end after a loss to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in the quarterfinals, 68-47. The team ended the season with a record of 8-22 and and were 3-11 in conference play. This was head coach Michelle Clark-Heard’s first year leading the Bears, and she is the first African American female head coach the school has ever had.

The quarterfinal game was held in Asheville, S.C. where the Bears were the No. 7 seed taking on the No. 4-seeded Mocs. Talia Harris ‘28 led the team in points with 13, Ariana Bennett ‘26 led the team in rebounds with six and Stephanie Utomi '28 led the team in assists with three. The Bears faced off against the Mocs last season in the postseason as well, losing the semifinals matchup, 66-55. The Bears are saying goodbye to seniors Ashlee Locke and Nahawa Diarra, who were each impactful players for the Bears.

The team was 5-10 in home games and 3-11 in games that were on the road. This year the Bears averaged 52.5 points, 31.5 rebounds, 9.9 assist, 7.0 steals and 3.3 blocks per game.
