Mercer University is mourning the loss of Provost Scott Davis, who died on Sunday, Feb. 9 of an apparent heart attack, according to an email sent to faculty and staff by President William D. Underwood on Monday morning. Davis, 61, served the university and its community for 34 years, and he is survived by his wife, Cathy, and their children, Miller Ann and Layne.
A Legacy of Leadership
In the email sent on Monday morning, Underwood reflected on Davis’s profound impact on Mercer, highlighting his dedication and leadership.
“I have terribly sad news to report. Our friend, our colleague, our Provost Dr. Scott Davis passed away last night of an apparent heart attack,” Underwood said in the email. “Scott was the finest provost with whom I have had the privilege to serve. In addition to a brilliant mind, Scott was determined to make Mercer the best it could be. He loved Mercer. When there were tough things that needed to be done, I could always count on Scott.”
Colleagues, friends and students have begun to share memories and reflections on Davis’ lasting influence. Among those honoring his legacy is Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students Douglas Pearson, who worked alongside Davis for many years and developed a strong friendship through their time at Mercer.
"Those of us who worked for Scott respected his brilliant mind, regularly seeking him out when we had complex problems to solve. His solutions, most often, were simple and straightforward, and based on one part science, one part Mark Twain wisdom and one part obscure rock band reference," Pearson said. "Scott's humor was legendary-biting but illustrative-and the best of it was reserved for those who worked closest with him."
Davis began his journey 34 years ago at Mercer in September 1991 as an assistant professor of chemistry. Over the years, he rose through the ranks and established himself as a leader and dedicated educator. In an email sent Wednesday evening, University Minister and Assistant Professor of Religion Craig McMahan reflected on Davis’ time at Mercer.
“Scott has distinguished himself as a key leader within our institution and a true 'force of nature,' navigating a steady stream of difficult challenges with wisdom, honesty and fairness," McMahan wrote. "With an unwavering passion for Mercer, Scott tirelessly put what was best for all of us ahead what was good for any of us. In great measure, we are the university we are today because of the life and work of Dr. Scott Davis.”
In 2012, Davis took on the role of provost, a position extended to him by Underwood. Over the next 13 years, he continued to shape the university’s academics with dedication and vision.
In an email sent on Thursday, Underwood updated the community that Penny Elkins, the university’s Executive Vice President, will assume the responsibilities of the Office of the Provost pending the appointment of a successor.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at 2:00 p.m. in the Toney Auditorium of Willingham Hall, according to an email from McMahan. All are invited to attend.
