Students unimpressed by new options at The Drop

The Drop added three new menu options Monday, Jan. 6, for the start of the new semester: Queso, a Mexican Chipotle-style restaurant, Drop Zone Pizzeria, a pizzeria offering custom creations, and Botrista, a cafe spot offering boba and coffee.

Student reactions to all three new additions to the menu have been halting so far.

Cody Burns ‘25, who said he was excited to try The Drop’s new offerings, said he “was not pleased with the service. There was a 75-minute wait, and they also got my order wrong.”

The Drop, which opened in August 2024, replaced two popular student dining options, Which Wich and Brewed Awakenings. It was met with skepticism early on. Frequently, students rapped on the plastic doors of The Drop in order to ask for a missing side or return an incorrect order.

In addition to long wait times this semester, many students noted a lack of consistency amongst both the portion sizes and flavor of the meals at the new locations. Burns compared the flavor of the ghost kitchen's cheese pizza to the taste of a “Lunchable pizza,” saying that it was “bland and uninspired.”

Hannah Bishop ‘28 reviewed Queso’s tacos in a similarly disappointed way, saying that the taste was "fine for what you would expect,” but that the “serving size and portion were barely enough to cover 3 tacos.”

Botrista, by contrast, has been mostly well received by students, despite some apprehension over the cafe’s offerings.

“A lot of boba from stores like this taste artificial” said Paula Santa Maria ‘28, speaking of Botrista’s drink offerings, “but this actually tastes authentic.” Maria was disappointed in the diversity of offerings, though. “They don’t have the regular tapioca pearls, which is sad, they just have the popping ones.”

Part of The Drop’s appeal is its adaptiveness as a virtual kitchen. Per an email sent to the student body on Jan. 6, “these new options are a direct response to students' requests for fresh and diverse choices at The Drop.” It is unclear how often the new options will roll out, though, but at least one option has been replaced so far: the "Smokehouse 1883" was replaced with the pizzeria option.
