In the face of predictions for snow, freezing rain and sleet, Mercer announced Thursday evening that "the decision has been made to close office and cancel classes on the Macon campus on Friday." The email came just hours after a school-wide message that stated classes would continue on Friday.
The Mercer Culinary Group, formerly known as Mercer Dining, announced on social media Thursday evening that all dining options but the Fresh Food Company would be closed Friday. The cafeteria will operate on limited hours, too, open from 7-10 a.m., 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5-8 p.m.
The National Weather Service told The Cluster on Thursday that the Macon area could expect to see a mix of snow, freezing rain and sleet starting Friday at 7 a.m. and lasting until 4 p.m. the same day.
Katie Martin, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service, said that the accumulation would be “negligible,” but that there could be enough precipitation on sidewalks and roads to necessitate precaution when walking and driving. Sub-freezing temperatures may keep walkways slick until Friday afternoon, and rain will continue throughout the day and into early Saturday morning, Martin said.
The expected conditions are a result of a cold air blast that has enveloped much of the southeast United States. Many offices, businesses and schools around the state have shut down temporarily following today’s statewide state of emergency declaration from Gov. Brian Kemp.
Kemp’s order runs through Tuesday, Jan. 14, by which time the winter storm should have run its course.
This story will be updated as the weather develops.
