Men’s basketball (9-10) fell at Wofford College (10-9), 69-49, this past Saturday. It is the Bears' fourth-straight loss to a Southern Conference opponent after starting the conference schedule 2-0.
The game was marked by season-low performances in terms of offensive efficiency by Mercer, which ran into a Terriers' defense that ranks fourth in the conference in points allowed. The Bears shot 29.8 percent from the field, including 18.2 percent from deep. The poor shooting was in stark contrast to Mercer's season averages of 44.4 percent from the field and 32.9 from behind the three-point line, and their 49 points scored were the lowest in any conference game this season.
The Bears kept things competitive during the first half, only down by three points at halftime, but the Terriers cranked up their offense in the second half. The home team scored eight-straight points with only five minutes left to create a deficit too large for the Bears to overcome. Mercer was given opportunities late, but was inefficient in the second period, going 8-for-29 throughout the half, ending the game with five-straight missed shots, unable to mount a comeback.
Alex Holt ‘25 led the team in points and was efficient with his opportunities, shooting 50 percent from the field. Ahmad Robinson ‘25 was unable to replicate his star-studded performance against Samford University the previous game, where he scored 29 points, this time only mustering eight points while going 3-for-13 from the field.
Brady Shoulders ‘28 came off the bench to lead both teams in offensive rebounds, beating out the Bulldogs, who lead the SoCon in rebounds per game. Shoulders also led the Bears in total boards, recording eight in 28 minutes.
With the loss, the Bears fell to 2-4 in SoCon play with an away match against University of North Carolina at Greensboro (12-7) this Wednesday, followed by a home game against the 15-4 Furman University Paladins on Saturday.
