After a two-day voting block, Mercer's Student Government Association (SGA) announced freshman senator election results on Sept. 5 in the CSC.
Freshman 2024-2025 Senators:
Ijeoma Omorogbe (Class President)
Junior Castelo
Luke Hand
Jocelyn Ramirez
Bobby Shelton
First-year students interested in joining SGA began promoting themselves in late August with flyers, social media campaigns and student incentives.
“For campaigning, I had a team that helped me create all the graphics and the videos. I wanted to work on talking to people one-on-one rather than passing out flyers. I didn’t print out anything or hand out candy, I just spoke to people directly," Senator Omorogbe '28 said. "When the banner dropped and I saw ‘Class President’ I was shocked.”
Candidates formally introduced themselves to the student body at the freshman candidate debate on Sept. 3rd. Many students, mainly first-years, attended the debate to receive additional information on SGA and the candidates before voting opened. Through the debate, candidates engaged with the audience in a town hall-style forum by answering questions, introducing their possible policies and making term promises.
“SGA senators as a whole are really the connecting part between the student body and higher ups in the school. For anything like starting a club, we are really open about that. If you need funding, we will back you up. That’s one of the biggest things that interested me in SGA: being able to help others start any kind of initiative that they wanted to on campus,” Senator Ramirez '28 said.
New and returning senators will have their first meeting Monday evening in CSC conference room three.
