John Thomas "Tom" Scott was named the new dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) by Provost D. Scott Davis yesterday, according to The Den.

Scott, who came to Mercer in 1991 as a history professor, served as the interim dean of the CLAS starting at the beginning of the school year in August 2023, after former Dean Anita Gustafson left Mercer to become President of Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC.

Scott has also formerly served as University Marshal, director of the Honors Program and chair of the history department at Mercer.

Davis and Scott both spoke to The Den about how impressed they are with the dedication and energy of the CLAS faculty during the search for a permanent dean, and how grateful they are for the work they do to support the CLAS.

"It was unexpected, but not unwelcomed," Scott said to the Cluster Friday.

Dean Scott also said how excited he is about his opportunity to continue to serve the students in this way and for the confidence of the provost and president in his capability to lead the college.
