The Mercer University football team traveled to Oxford, Mississippi to compete against FBS foe Ole Miss on Sept. 2.
After quarterback Carter Peevy ran for a 75-yard touchdown on the Bears’ first offensive play of the game, it seemed like Mercer might be able to give the Rebels a run for their money. However, that was the only time the Bears would reach the end zone, and Ole Miss won its season opener, 73-7.
Peevy completed 16 of his 29 passing attempts for 138 yards, and rushed for 49 yards on seven attempts. Devron Harper ‘24 and Ty James ‘24 each had four receptions for a combined 76 yards.
Defensively, Marques Thomas ‘25 stood out with seven tackles, four of which were solo. Lance Wise ‘24 also recorded six tackles, three of which were solo.
The Bears now hold a 1-1 record on the season after defeating the University of North Alabama in their season opener Aug. 26 Mercer will host its first game this Saturday, Sept. 9 against Morehead State University at 7 p.m in Five Star Stadium.
This was the first time the Bears played the Rebels since Mercer reinstated its football program in 2013, as well as the fourth SEC matchup for Mercer since 2013. The Bears will play Auburn in their 2024 season, which will be the third time the two teams meet since their first meeting in 2017.
With Mercer football returning to Five Star Stadium this Saturday, the Ford Concert Series is also returning to Macon. Nashville artists Jon Langston will headline the opening of the series on Saturday along with Spencer Crandall.
