The Bear Breakdown: Pre-spring-break Mercer athletics rundown

Baseball

Mercer’s baseball season started Feb. 17 when the Bears defeated William & Mary 9-8 to kick off the three-game series. The Tribe managed to take a game away from the Bears, but ultimately Mercer took the series win.

Next, the team traveled to Tallahassee, Florida to face Florida A&M for two midweek games where the Bears defeated the Rattlers 21-5 and 8-7. Mercer returned home last weekend for a three-game series against Rhode Island and ended up losing the standoff 2-1.

The Bears are now standing at a 5-3 record so far as the team heads into this weekend’s home series against Bellarmine. The team will play on Friday at 6 p.m., a doubleheader on Saturday at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. and will finish the weekend with Sunday at 1 p.m. 

Softball

The softball team hosted the season-opening Heart of Georgia Classic on Feb. 10 when the Bears defeated Hampton University 7-0. Mercer also traveled to DeLand, Florida to compete in the Hatter Classic, defeating Monmouth University and Fairfield University but losing to Stetson University.

The Bears hosted another tournament last weekend and lost all three games to the University of South Carolina, Belmont and Jacksonville. The team is currently at a 4-9 overall record and will travel to Tuscaloosa, Alabama this weekend to compete in the Easton Crimson Classic to face Longwood, Robert Morris and the University of Alabama. 

Men's Tennis

The men’s tennis team kicked off the 2023 season back in January and is currently sitting at a 6-6 record. The team most recently went on a four-game losing streak but bounced back last weekend with two big wins against Georgia College and Fairfield. The Bears are traveling to Statesboro to take on Georgia Southern this Saturday, March 4 at 2 p.m.

Women's Tennis

Women’s tennis also started their season in January, and they lost the first two matches of the season to Kennesaw and Wofford. The season started to turn around, however, when the Bears went on a four-match winning streak which was ended by Florida Gulf Coast. The team bounced back with two wins at home last weekend against Georgia College and Lipscomb. The Bears are traveling to Athens to face the University of Georgia on Saturday at 2 p.m. 

Women's Basketball

The women’s basketball team is 12-15 so far this season and has gone 8-6 in conference play.

Last week, the team traveled to Greenville, South Carolina and defeated Furman then went to Spartanburg, South Carolina and fell to Wofford. The Bears begin the Southern Conference tournament on Thursday, March 2 at 1:15 p.m. and will take on UNC Greensboro. The Bears have met the Spartans twice, losing 69-72 in the first meeting and winning 65-46 in the second. 

Men's Basketball

The men’s basketball team is currently holding a 13-18 overall record, going 6-12 so far in conference play. Most recently the team was in a slump, losing seven games in a row and breaking the streak with a 72-50 win over the Citadel. The team is traveling to Asheville, North Carolina to play in the Southern Conference tournament where the first game will be against the Citadel on Friday 5 p.m.

Men's Lacrosse

The men’s lacrosse team started the season Feb. 4 by traveling to Lewisburg, Pennsylvania where the Bears lost to Bucknell University 20-6. The team defeated Holy Cross at home 15-6 and is 1-3 so far this season.

The Bears remain home to face the Air Force Academy on Saturday at noon.

Women's lacrosse

Women’s lacrosse started the 2023 season Feb. 19 against Virginia Tech and defeated the Hokies 11-8. The team lost to Davidson College on Feb. 26 and are currently standing at a 1-1 record. The Bears will travel to Washington, D.C. to play George Washington University on Saturday at noon.

Beach Volleyball 

The beach volleyball began the season on Friday, Feb. 24 as the team traveled to DeLand, Florida to compete in the Stetson Tournament. The Bears could not take home any wins and are 0-4 so far this season as the team prepares to travel to Jacksonville, Florida this weekend. The tournament will kick off on Friday, and the Bears will play Jacksonville University at 8 a.m.
