Bearstock 2019 to feature Aminé, Joywave, local artists and more

QuadWorks, Mercer University’s student programming board, will host its annual Bearstock concert on campus April 8.

“Bearstock is an annual day of concerts for both the Mercer community and the Macon community,” said Mimi Nguyen, a member of the QuadWorks Special Events Team.

The daytime half of Bearstock will be hosted on Tattnall Square Park and will be open to the public from 12-5 p.m.

The daytime artist will include local artists Kim Meeks, EM&ED, Simeon, Hindsight, 95.waves and Kaffo, The Sensei.

Each group offers its own unique style of music, according to Nguyen. Band .95 waves, for example, will be performing jazz, while Simeon is a rapper.

Artists Joywave and Ayokay will perform with the headliner, Aminé at the evening portion of the event.

The nighttime half of the concert will be exclusive to students. It will take place in Hawkins Arena from 8-11 p.m.

Bearstock is free to students with a Mercer ID.

“People can expect a large crowd regardless of which (time of day) they choose to go to, but the night portion is expected to be particularly crowded this year because students are allowed to bring two guests at the cost of $5 each,” Nguyen said.

The lineup was announced to Mercer students March 11 at 12 p.m.

“I think this year’s line-up is great,” said Student Government Association (SGA) President Adam Penland, a junior. “They are all going to be extremely fun to listen and dance to.”

In the past few years, QuadWorks has invited artists such as COIN, 6lack, B.o.B. and Waka Flocka to headline the nighttime concert.

Nguyen said feedback from previous years inspired this year’s artist choices.

“Students have been super excited about the night line-up this year,” she said. “We received feedback that the artist last year was too chill and obscure, so we aimed to choose an artist that is moderately well-known and in our price range.”

Joywave is an American indie rock band consisting of five members. The other supporting act, Ayokay, blends several different genres of music in his popular songs, such as “Stay With Me” and “Sleepless Nights.”

Aminé is an American rapper that rose to fame due to his famous song “Caroline.”

Freshman Ethan Kwak said Bearstock will be the first concert he has attended.

“I feel like they picked a good group of people to perform because their songs are something that people constantly listen to,” Kwak said. “It will be a fun experience.”
