Mercer University will be hosting the senior art exhibit at the Tubman Museum in downtown Macon from April 27 through May 12.
The exhibit will feature artwork in a variety of mediums from both the graphic design students and the fine art students. Ranging from vibrant skateboards to bar branding, there will be much to see at the show this spring.
Senior graphic designer, Songha Beak, said she will be infusing her Korean heritage with her American lifestyle with the use of skateboards.
“My project is really colorful!” Beak said. “Mine is going to be a skate shop. I have 20 skateboards, hopefully I can show them all. I’m Korean. I’m from Korea, (but) I lived here since fourth grade…so I’m putting Korean music artists faces on the skateboards.”
Beak’s goal is to incorporate Korean artists with the skateboards that are symbolic of American culture to create a cultural infusion piece.
Senior graphic design artist Megan Gates is doing something a little different.
“I’m branding a bar,” Gates said. “I’m going to build a sign, and there’s going to be a high-top table with chairs, and it’s going to have an actual bar shelf with different liquor bottles that I’m designing the labels for. On the tables, there will be napkins and menus that I designed,” Gates said.
Each student’s display will be of their personal, individual interest.
“Mine is all on national parks. There will be posters and postcards and stamps. Those will be blown up and will be hanging,” said graphic designer Bethany Alexander.
Luke Buffenmyer, assistant professor of art in the College of Liberal Arts, said he thinks very highly of the senior art students.
“They’re going to do a great job. They are going to do awesome,” Buffenmyer said.
The Tubman Museum is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday through Saturday.
