The Mercer University Orchestra prepares for the upcoming concert on March 23 at 7:30 p.m.

The Mercer University Orchestra will perform music from Mendelssohn, Elgar and Diamond at their upcoming concert on March 23, ending a “week-long residency [at the Robert McDuffie Center for Strings] by Performance Today, the most-listened-to classical music [radio] program in the country,” said Amy Schwartz Moretti, the Director of the Robert McDuffie Center for Strings.

Mercer students and members of the Macon community alike are welcome to join this celebration of classical music and become part of the 1.5 million listeners of Performance Today for an evening.

Performance Today host Fred Child will emcee the event. Townsend School of Music Concerto Competition winners Atticus Mellor-Goldman and Zhihao Wu will also perform Vivaldi’s “Concerto for 2 Cellos” as part of the concert, which will be directed by conductor Ward Stare.

I'm particularly excited for this because performing concerti with an orchestra is always a really amazing opportunity for the soloists to be showcased, and when the orchestra you're performing with entirely consists of friends who you consider to be a part of your family, that experience is made all the more special,” Mellor-Goldman said.

The MU Orchestra just returned from their appearance at Carnegie Hall in New York City, where they performed many of the same works.

“It will be wonderful showing Mercer and Macon what we performed in one of the most renowned concert venues in the world,” Mellor-Goldman said.

The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. and is free to the public. However, tickets must be requested by calling the Grand Opera House Box Office at 478-301-5470. The Grand Opera House is located at 651 Mulberry St.
