1.This week Mercer University’s football team held elections and named six captains for the upcoming season. Head Coach Bobby Lamb confirmed that the team held a voting and named three offensive and three defensive captains. From the Bears offense, wide receiver Jordan Marshall, quarterback John Russ and offensive lineman Kirby Southard will bear the honors. On the defensive side of the ball, safety Lendell Arnold and linebackers Tosin Aguebor and Tyler Ward will be leading the team.
2. Coach Brad Ruzzo and the Mercer men’s soccer team suffered a loss to No. 8 Clemson Sept. The Mercer Bears started strong and gave Clemson a hard fought game during the first half, but after 25 minutes Clemson was able to hit the back of the net to make it 1-0. It only took the Bears 15 minutes to respond as man-of-the-match Drew Schall hit a strong header to level the score 1-1 40 minutes into the first half. The score stood 1-1 at halftime. In the second half, Clemson struck three unanswered goals to finish 4-1 as the whistle blew.
3. The afternoon of Sept. 6 saw Mercer women’s soccer team drop a game to Appalachian State. The players headed to the sidelines at halftime after a scoreless half. The first goal of the game came from the Bears at 47 minutes as Haleigh Svede connected on a pinpoint pass from Jamilah Tejan. Appalachian State quickly responded as they scored 67 minutes into the game. Luck seemed to be working against the Bears as a penalty was given up late, and the team was unable to respond before the whistle. The final score read 2-1 as Mercer recorded another loss and fell to 1-3 this season.
4. Mercer volleyball traveled to the University of Southern Mississippi to compete in the Southern Miss Invitational. The Bears played two games on Saturday, September 5 against the hosts Southern Mississippi, and Nicholls State University. After a dominating display against Southern Mississippi, the Bears walked away with a 3-0 win. The second game saw the Bears win the first set, but they then gave up two consecutive sets, which proved to be enough for Nicholls State to walk away with the win after five sets with a final score of 3-2.
5. This week saw the Mercer Bear-A-Van travel to Byron, Georgia. The Bear-A-Van has already visited the city of Forsyth, located a little north on the interstate, earlier this semester, but they decided to head south for this trip. The people of Byron were extremely excited for this visit. Mayor Larry Collins emphasized how much Mercer impacts Byron.
“I’m so proud of the Mercer Bears. Byron has a significant connection to Mercer,” Collins said in a statement.
