When students are at school, especially in high school, it is easy to go to a vending machine and buy a bag of chips and a soda to stave off the hunger during a break. Many say buying food from vending machines provides a cost effective alternative to buying lunch in the cafeteria, as a soda is usually $1.25 and a bag of chips is around $0.75.
However, that is not usually the best option. In addition, most students do not give much thought to what they are actually putting into their bodies. Many students do not exercise outside of their mandatory gym class. After school, they usually go home to take a nap, start on homework, play video games, or they go to a friend’s house to do one or more of these things.
In a world with so many different things going on, many students do not take the time to exercise as needed for a healthy lifestyle.Many sodas contain excessive amounts of sugar, and most potato chips contain saturated fats that are not healthy in large amounts.
Students who consume these foods are more likely to develop health and weight issues. Some students develop these issues during their time in high school and others do shortly after graduation.
Students spend over $120 billion on junk food each year. That is an average of about $8 per student every day, which equates to about three 20oz. sodas and multiple bags of potato chips.
Many school lunches offered follow strict health guidelines, and the students can purchase the meals for much less than $8.
Parents and teachers should encourage students to eat in the cafeteria, and by doing this the students get a healthier lunch and save money.As stated above, junk food has little to no nutritional value and in excessive amounts over time, it can prove to be quite expensive. An alternative available to students is to eat lunch in the school cafeteria. This is a healthier and much more cost effective alternative in the end.
