Brianna Williams breaks all-time scoring records
Sophomore Brianna Williams recently scored a record-setting 54 points in the Women’s Basketball game against USC Upstate. She scored the most points in one game in Mercer history and also broke the all-time Atlantic Sun record. She was just six points shy of the all-time NCAA Division 1 record.
The previous record, set in 1987, was 51 points. With 30 seconds left on the clock, and Brianna’s score at 51, Head Coach Susie Gardner allowed Williams to call her own play.
“My assistants told me not to tell her how close she was to the record,” Gardner said. “As it got towards the end I could see she was fatigued, so I told her. I felt like if I let her know she could turn it on.”
In the final seconds of the game, Williams sunk a three-point basket that both broke the record and won the game. The final score was 87-71.
