For cooking fanatics, living in a dorm room for a year, a place devoid of a kitchen where even toasters are strictly outlawed, can seem like a life sentence.
(If you live in one of the on-campus apartments, you have a kitchen. This article is not for you. Use whatever recipes you want to.)
However, there are ways to get your cook on within the bounds of a dormitory living situation.
Firstly, don’t underestimate the power of a microwave. Dorm residents are permitted to bring a microwave oven and a minifridge to their new abodes, and these are the only ingredients necessary to have a home-cooked meal.
Also, crock pots are permitted in the dormitories, which is great for cooking hearty stews, soups, and even pot roasts.
Keep healthy, home cooking essentials in your refridgerator. Raw carrots, salad mix, any fruits you crave, and Yoo-Hoo all deserve permanent spots on your minifridge shelves. If your fridge has a freezer, keep meat in it.
If you purchase chicken, a can of cream of mushroom soup, some boil-in-bag rice and a bag of steam-in-bag rice, you can cook a delicious, filling and healthy meal.
First, defrost the chicken. Cook the rice and make a bed of rice in a glass casserole dish. Then tuck the defrosted fowl into its rice bed and top with the can of mushroom soup. Insert the casserole dish into the microwave and cook thoroughly. (The time varies depending on the wattage of your microwave.)
Make certain the chicken is fully cooked by cutting it in the center. If there is any trace of pinkness in the meat, DON’T EAT IT. Put it back in the microwave and cook until it is white all the way through.
If you are willing to spend the money on a roast and have a crock pot, it’s time to make a pot roast.
Put the roast in the crock pot with chopped carrots, peeled and cut potatoes, onions and (Mom’s secret ingredient) Coke-a-Cola. Cook it overnight. The delicious aroma might drive you crazy, but try to wait 14 to 20 hours before digging in.
If you’re not the best chef in the world but still want to cook for yourself, cans of soup, microwaveable burritos, TV dinners and macaroni and cheese.
