Looking for a movie with strong female characters and a heartfelt message? “A Wrinkle in Time” is the way to go.
The film is based off of a novel by the same name written by Madeleine L’Engle.
“A Wrinkle in Time” has an all-star cast of strong women including Oprah Winfrey as Mrs. Which, Mindy Kaling as Mrs. Who and Reese Witherspoon as Mrs. Whatsit, as well as up-and-coming actress Storm Reid, who plays Meg Murray, the main character. Reid is just 14 years old.
Also present is a diverse cast and crew. There is an interracial couple at the forefront of the film, Doctors Kate and Alexander Murray played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Chris Pine respectively. The movie was also directed by Ava DuVernay, a black woman who has also directed “Selma,” a movie chronicling Martin Luther King Jr.’s march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. DuVernay also directed “13th,” a documentary bringing to light the racial injustice of the prison system in the United States.
“A Wrinkle in Time” is about self-acceptance and self-love. Meg struggles with loving herself throughout the majority of the film and is self-conscious of her appearance, especially her hair — which she wears naturally.
By the end of the film, Meg realizes her flaws are what make her strong and beautiful. This message is only strengthened by the strong women surrounding her, such as her mother, Mrs. Which, Mrs. Who and Mrs. Whatsit.
The acting in this film is captivating, especially by the younger actors like Reid, Deric McCabe who plays Charles Wallace, Meg’s younger brother and Levi Miller who plays Meg’s friend Calvin. There is such a wide range, especially from such young actors, and the audience becomes a part of their family and the story.
Visually, this film is extraordinary. The costuming done by Paco Delgado is extravagant and colorful and completely unique. It truly brings you into another universe.
The film was very enjoyable, even for someone who has never read the book. It is a truly beautiful movie. It is not a romance, it is not a simplistic story about bouncing around the universe. “A Wrinkle in Time” is about self-discovery, and I think that is an important lesson and reminder for everyone. I recommend this movie highly.
