Bid Day Blitz

Chapter members of Alpha Gamma Delta lined up on bid day to welcome their new members
Chapter members of Alpha Gamma Delta lined up on bid day to welcome their new members

On August 22, 2015, a ceremony was commencing in the Greek Village of the Mercer University campus known to the world as sorority bid day or girl’s bid day. Having never witnessed this ritual my previous year and hearing from everyone how incredible this event was, I decided that I should be privy to this knowledge and figure out what made this occasion so remarkable. So at around 3:00 p.m., everyone decided to head out and watch the spectacle. As I made the long 500 foot walk, the first thing I noticed about that day was that it was really, really hot. It was like putting a warm frying pan under feet; it wouldn’t bother you immediately but you could tell something was not right. However, as I approached the event I saw the sororities gathered in their respective areas like tribes, complete with glitter, paint and bright shirts that were the major color of their sorority.

Once I arrived to the event, I began to notice a few rituals that were taking place with the sororities. The first process was  “the glittering.” Seriously, the amount of glitter they had on that day was ridiculous. They used it to put their initials and symbols all over themselves. Some of them even threw it up in the air, letting it settle like dust clouds. After this came an attempt to rile one another into a frenzy. The sorority girls were jumping up and down, screaming in excitement and doing all they could to act like they were having a ball. They even had overly-hyped music like Katy Perry and Taylor Swift at one point. Truth be told, I knew that despite the scorching heat, they were all super excited. I mean, how couldn’t they be? They had all gone through this process and knew how excited their new members were. When I was given a bid to Alpha Tau Omega and had to run up that huge hill, it was one of my favorite moments.

As the first of the new pledges for Alpha Gamma Delta showed up, everyone began to lose their mind. After a few moments both sides of the Alpha Gamma Delta family, members and pledges, rushed towards each other. The collision was crazy and for moment I thought there would be injuries. But after I heard the screams of joy, I figured things were all right. After them came Alpha Delta Pi (my sister asked me to take a lot of pictures for that moment in particular), followed by Phi Mu and culminating in Chi Omega rushing to greet their new pledges. Overall, it was a fun event, and I’m glad I got to see it. It reminds me what I have to look forward to for fraternity bid day. It will have no glitter, but it will have the same excitement and fun and the welcoming of new people on their road towards becoming a brother.
